Feasts this week. http://saints.catholic.org/index.sht
Thursday: Saint Pius the Tenth.
Born in 1835, Giuseppe Sarto became Cardinal Archbishop of Venice. In 1903 he was elected pope and took the name Pius. He is remembered especially for encouraging the practice of frequent Communion. He died in 1914.
Friday: Mary is the Queen of Heaven.
Today's feast says that Mary ranks above every other created person in heaven. She is more important than any other man or woman there (the' saints'). She is more important than the other people who were created by God to stay in heaven (the 'angels'). She holds her position as Queen because, out of all those created beings, she was the only one worthy enough to have been chosen to be the Mother of God.
Saturday: Saint Eugene.
Eugene, born about 550, went abroad to study for the priesthood. After ordination he returned home and set up several monasteries, the principal one being at Ardstraw (near Newtownstewart) in County Tyrone. He is regarded as the first bishop of our Diocese.
